Welcome Home

Child looking through hole in Welcome Home Sculpture by Aoife Valley
The hole in Welcome Home Sculpture by Aoife Valley

This piece of work is interactive. The viewer is invited to look into the hole in the old tree and inside is something illuminated by magenta light.

Most people have had a strong emotional response to seeing what is in the hole and seem to leave with a smile.

The wood is a front section of an old tree found in a bog of Gortahork. The back section is gone so it appears to be like a door.

This artwork was exhibited as part of the Cosan Glas 'Loinnir' Night time Sculpture Trail in Magheraoarty Beach in July and in Letterkenny Town Park in September 2011 as part of Culture Night.

Crystals in water, part of Bog Offering Sculpture by Aoife Valley

The structure of this artwork is bog wood. On it is carefully placed the crystal lepidolite to reflect light and enhance the flow of grain and bark.

On the roots of the tree are placed handmade paper cocoon-like bowls containing crushed crystals and water. The white light shines upon the wood and paper bowls to reflect off water, crystal and wood.

The crystals used are lepidolite, amethyst, rose quartz, phantom quartz, agate and jade.

It is an offering to the bogs which once contained forests and now sustain the people of this land in so many ways.

This artwork was exhibited as part of the Cosan Glas 'Loinnir' Night time Sculpture Trail in Magheraoarty Beach in July and in Letterkenny Town Park in September 2011 as part of Culture Night 2011.

Return of the Goddess

Return of the Goddess

Return of the Goddess is a sculpture made from glass and wood found on Ballyness Bay and Falcarragh Beach. She was exhibited as part of the Cosan Glas Sculpture Trail in Magheroarty Beach in July and then as part of Culture Night in Letterkenny Town Park in September 2010.

For months I was collecting broken glass on the beach with the idea of putting it in the bottle bank. Gradually the beauty of the glass inspired the idea of making something new from the sad and brutal act of people throwing glass into the sea. This Goddess is a tribute to the power of recycling - creating something fresh and beautiful from that which is discarded as rubbish.

I let the body come together itself over the months, with my only structural idea to use the Kuan Yin royal ease pose with it's dignity and power.
